Onodera 40

From Alliance of Independent Nations Wiki
Kazuto Kirigaya is currently the richest person in Teiko since 2020

The Onodera 40 or 40 Richest Teikonians is an list published annually by Onodera magazine of the wealthiest 40 Teikonians ranked by net worth. The list which gained controversy when first published in 1998 became a traditional gauge when assessing the higher echelons of the Teikonian society. Although many critics had questioned the credibility of the list, it still remains as one of the most syndicated rankings in Teiko. Onodera 40 has been for years considered to be the real evidence of sprouting capitalism and corporate imperialism in the country.

Since 2000, the list has then been published each year in March. Kazuto Kirigaya, founder of Blue Lightning currently tops the list since 2020. Second placer Masahito Akashi, chairman of Akashi Group and the current head of the Akashi clan holds the title for the most years in number one. Akashi has topped the list 17 times of the past 23 years. The only times he failed to topped the list was from 2014 to 2015, and from 2020 to 2023. The other two billionaires who managed to the top the list were Kei Takishima, chairman of SZT Group of Companies and Takumi Usui, chairman of Usui Industries. As of August 2023, there are 49 billionaires in Teiko including a record 10 women with more than half of the people in the list below 50 and roughly one-third of the list had no significant inherited wealth while the rest are inherited. The minimum required net worth to join the list has increased drastically from US$250 million in 2000 to US$1.5 billion 2023.

Methodology[edit | edit source]

Each year, Onodera employs a team of more than fifty reporters from a variety of countries to track the activity of Teiko's wealthiest individuals. Preliminary surveys are sent to those who may qualify for make the list. According to Onodera, they received three types of responses – some people try to inflate their wealth, others cooperate but leave out details, and some refuse to answer any questions. Business deals are then scrutinized and estimates of valuable assets – land, homes, vehicles, artwork, etc. – are made. Interviews are conducted to vet the figures and get a better idea of an individual's holdings. Finally, positions in publicly traded stock are priced to market on a date roughly a month before publication. Privately held companies are priced by the prevailing price-to-revenues or price-to-earnings ratios. Known debt is subtracted from assets to get a final estimate of an individual's estimated worth in United States dollars. Since stock prices fluctuate rapidly, an individual's true wealth and ranking at the time of publication may vary from their situation when the list was compiled.

Family fortunes dispersed over a large number of individuals are included only if those individuals' holdings are worth more than a billion dollars. However, when a living individual has dispersed his or her wealth to immediate family members, it is included under a single listing provided that individual is still living. Royalty and dictators whose wealth comes from their positions are excluded from the list.
