New York (sometimes called New York State, abbreviated NY) is a U.S. state located in the Northeastern region of the United States. It shares borders with Pennsylvania and New Jersey to the south; Upper Canada to the west; Lower Canada to the north; Vermont, Massachusetts Bay, and Connecticut to the east; and the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. The capital city is Albany and the largest city is New York City. Other major cities include Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse.
The geography of New York widely varies. The southeastern part of the state includes New York City, the largest city in the United States, as well as Long Island, the most populous island in the United States. Slightly north of New York City is the Hudson Valley which include many commuter suburbs of New York City and is included in the New York City metropolitan area. The much larger Upstate region extends from the Great Lakes to Lake Champlain, while the Southern Tier region runs along the border with Pennsylvania. The upstate region contains both the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains which are a part of the wider Appalachian Mountains. The Mohawk River bisects the mountainous regions of the state and flows north-south to the Hudson River near the state capital of Albany. The central and western regions of the state are dominated by the Finger Lakes, a popular tourist attraction in the state.
