Koyomi Araragi (阿良 々木暦, Araragi Koyomi, born 22 June 1986) is a Teikonian politician serving as the 55th Daijō-daijin and Leader of the National Party since November 2021. He had previously served multiple positions under Daijō-daijin Seijuro Akashi including Udaijin, Minister for State Security, Minister for Kaijo AIN Expo, and Minister for COVID-19 Pandemic Response. He is the first Daijō-daijin to be born after the 1984 Teiko constitutional crisis. In June 2022, Koyomi Araragi was named as the 2021 Teiko Shinbun Person of the Year for an inspiring and enlightening leadership amidst darkest hours.[1]
Born to a family of rice farmers in rural Kamizaki Prefecture, Araragi moved to Kaijo after graduating in high school, where he enrolled in the University of Kaijo. Shortly after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, Araragi worked under the Ministry of Interior and Home Affairs in 2008. In 2010, Araragi joined the National Party and formally entered politics when he was elected to the Royal Council the following year in 2011.
During his time in the Royal Council, Araragi became a close ally and friend of Daijō-daijin Akashi. In 2016, he was appointed Minister for Kaijo AIN Expo and oversaw the first AIN Expo in Asia and the first AIN Expo in more than five years. The success of the event propelled Araragi to the national stage and boosted his popularity. He was later appointed as Udaijin and Minister for State Security where both positions he would hold until the end of Akashi's term in 2022. Araragi was selected to lead the bidding committee for the 2020 AIN Summer Games to Teiko but the event was suspended and then cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, resources for the 2020 AIN Summer Games were realigned and Araragi became instrumental in the nation's efforts against the pandemic as the Minister for COVID-19 Pandemic Response. In this capacity, Araragi appeared frequently in the media conducting press briefings and announcements. After the failed assassination attempt against Daijō-daijin Akashi in May 2020, Araragi headed the task force that successfully captured the culprits. These success has greatly improved his image and prestige within the ruling National Party.
After Daijō-daijin Seijuro Akashi announced that he is not seeking a sixth term in the upcoming 2021 Teiko general elections, Araragi was among the names that were considered as top contenders as his successor. Opinion polling has suggested that Araragi was considered by the general public as their most favorite to replace Akashi. In the 2021 National Party leadership election, he failed to get more than 50% of the votes in the first round but secured a strong 66% in the runoff making him the party leader. In the 2021 general elections, the National Party under Araragi won more than 140 seats ensuring his election as the next Daijō-daijin. In November 2021, four days after the elections, the Royal Council officially elected Araragi as Daijō-daijin.

In October 2020, Araragi authorized a raid in the Hongo Industries headquarters in Kaijo and has asked the court for an arrest warrant against its CEO Kanata Hongo.[2] In November 2020, Minister Araragi confirmed that the main suspects for the 2020 May cyberattacks were nabbed near Okinawa.[3]
Daijō-daijin[edit | edit source]
Koyomi Araragi was elected as the 55th Daijō-daijin on 29 November 2021. In his first speech in the Royal Council as Daijō-daijin, Araragi promised to rebuild economy and strengthen national unity. His inauguration was witnessed by diplomats from different countries including the United States, the Soviet Union, Oka, Nakama, Takamaiku, West Pacific, Siculia, New Duveland, and Neu Westfalen.
COVID-19 response[edit | edit source]
Cases in the country has continued to stabilize since the start of the Araragi administration. In his inaugural speech, Araragi cited that his government will focus more on post-pandemic concerns while continuously upholding the nation's current Covid-19 policy. In the same speech, Araragi promised support for those heavily affected by the Covid-19 pandemic including a larger budget for an economic stimulus package.
In May 2022, Araragi announced a shift in the nation's Covid-19 pandemic strategy focusing on living with the virus instead of a zero Covid policy. Araragi explained that the nation's high vaccination rate and stronger healthcare system are key factors in the decision making. In line with this announcement, Araragi also announced that the country will restart opening borders for all types of travelers from countries that are deemed safe.[4]
In August 2022, Araragi has declared victory over Covid-19 and has abolished the dedicated Ministry for Covid-19 Pandemic Response citing citing that daily cases and hospital utilization rate has both plateaued. All its functions, powers and responsibilities were transferred to the Ministry of Health and Medical Services. The move was seen as inline with the government's plan to focus focus more on post pandemic response.[5] The Araragi government also lifted the mask mandate except when in healthcare setting such as hospitals, elder care facilities, and clinics among others.[6]

In 2022, Araragi signed the Right to Information Bill and Anti-Conspiracy Bill, the first two major non-economic legislations of his government.[8] Both bills has been leftovers from the previous Akashi government.
Economic policy[edit | edit source]
Under the Araragi administration, the Royal Council passed the largest government budget in history.[9]
Araragi announced that he is supporting the reforms pushed for by Minister for Commerce Kurisu Makise which includes limiting allowable overtime, crating a progressive wage index in lieu of the minimum wage, and standardizing fringe benefits. Araragi also supported the promotion of alternative ways of working such as working from home. In a speech, he acknowledge that hybrid work will be the future.
In June 2022, Araragi signed the sin tax law. The policy was supported all members of the National Party and the Constitutional National Party. The sin tax aims to increase government revenues while at the same time discourage consumers.[10]
In December 2022, Araragi signaled a major government U-turn on economic policy towards big businesses. Araragi emphasized the need to protect micro, small, and medium enterprises and the need to end reliance of big corporations on cheap government loans and bailouts.[11]
Foreign policy[edit | edit source]
In April 2022, Araragi announced the creation of a new Daito district which will be part of the Ryukyu region. Araragi has also pushed for greater cooperation in East Asia including the resumption of the Teiko-Oka-Nakama trilateral summit and the participation of Teiko to the Teiko-Soviet Union-Sansheng trilateral summit. Araragi has also announced that he is seeking closer ties with countries in Latin America, Europe, and Africa.
In June 2022, Daijō-daijin Araragi and Nakama Prime Minister Takashi agreed in principle that the Daito island issue is an exclusive issue for Teiko, Oka, and Nakama and that the three nations involved in the dispute should sort the matter themselves. Many see the statement as a rebuke to third party nations which has been meddling in the Daito island dispute.[12]
In March 2023, Araragi lifted the visa requirement for all members of the Alliance of Independent Nations. The shift in policy hopes to attract more foreign tourists to the country. The policy is in line with Araragi's vision for a more open Teiko in the global stage.[13]
