Many important administrative institutions of the confederation along with numerous historic parks, monuments and museums are located in Hisbanya. This includes the Baliscan Cabildo, Quinta de Viñas, the Metropolitan Council of Castejón building and the headquarters of numerous government agencies, the Baliscan War Memorial, the Museum of Indigenous Peoples, the Southern Institute of the Arts, the Confederal Gallery, the Anhangá Museum and the Confederal Library. It hosts numerous foreign embassies as well as regional headquarters of many international organizations.

For much of the 20th century the borough maintained stringent height restriction laws that prevented the construction of buildings taller than 91 meters (300 feet), resulting in an absence of high-rise buildings that typically characterize the rest of the Metropolis. This changed with the implementation of the Casajuan Plan in 2014 and the development of Nueva Cuenca ("new basin"), alongside other rapid verticalization.

Hisbanya has adopted ideas of Ildefons Cerdà into it's urban design, and incorporates significant areas of natural vegetation. Other notable features include the Crystal Palace, the Tidal Basin and surrounding Parc Sakura. Highlights in the annual calendar of cultural events include Floriade, the largest flower festival in the Southern Hemisphere, the Fire Festival, Afropunk, the National Multicultural Festival and Festival de la Humanitá. Major main sporting venues include Olimpicano Stadium and the Montjuïc Oval.
