Governors of the provinces of New Duveland
Each province and territory of New Duveland has a governor, or Lieutenant Governor to represent New Duveland's monarch within it. The governors are the nominal chief executives of the provinces, performing the same constitutional and ceremonial functions at the province level as does the Governor-General of New Duveland at the national or federal level. In practice, with notable exceptions the governors are generally required by convention to act on the advice of the province premiers or the other members of a province's cabinet. Terms are limited at five year intervals, are are appointed by the advice from the national Governor General, from the advice of the current Prime Minister. Each province, as per the Governors Act 1966, a new Governor must be appointed every 5 years, with guidelines specifying that changeover just has to occur within the year itself, leading to some Governors reaching terms as long as almost 6 years or as short as just over 4.
Origins[edit | edit source]
The office of Lieutenant Governor ("governor in chief" was an early title) is the oldest constitutional office in New Duveland. The title was first used with the Governor of Moanarua, and dates back to 1788 to the day on which the area (which is now the city of Macquarie) became the first British settlement in New Duveland. The other provinces that were established as a British colony had governor was appointed by the British government to exercise executive authority over the colony. Whereas colonies, or later, provinces that had been originally colonised by France would later adopt a Lieutenant Governor upon their unification within the Commonwealth Realm of New Duveland, with the first Lieutenant governors in Devereaux and Lapérouse commencing in 1963, and New Caledonia in 2013.
