The Chief Justice of Teiko (最高裁判所長官, Saikōsaibansho-chōkan) is the chief judge of the Supreme Court of Teiko and is the head of the judicial branch of the Federal Government of Teiko.
The Chief Justice is ceremonially appointed by the Prince of Teiko after being nominated by the Daijō-daijin. In practice, the Daijō-daijin nominates from a list recommended by the outgoing Chief Justice. Under the Constitution of Teiko, the only other official appointed by the Prince is the Daijō-daijin, emphasizing the status of the Court as independent from the elected government. Chief Justices, similar to Associates Justices of the Supreme Court of Teiko are expected to serve for life and can only be removed either by resignation, retirement, impeachment or death.
The chief justice has significant influence in the selection of cases for review, presides when oral arguments are held, and leads the discussion of cases among the justices. Additionally, when the court renders an opinion, the chief justice, if in the majority, chooses who writes the court's opinion. When deciding a case, however, the chief justice's vote counts no more than that of any other justice.
