Carabassa (Baliscano pronunciation: [kə.ɾəˈβa.sə]; Mozarabic: Calabaza), is the administrative seat and most populous city within the Araucarian region Vitacura. It is considered the southern extremity of the Concordia conurbation.
The city's name refers to the "calabash", translated as carabassa (“pumpkin; orange colour”), which were cultivated by early settlers. Major settlement in the area began following the eruption of the Maroon Wars the early 17th century. At the turn of the 20th century, the city had a reputation as one of the most dangerous port cities in the archipelago and a hub for Baliscan organized crime, such as prostitution, racketeering and smuggling. During Balisca's shift to a war economy amid World War II, Carabassa experienced an economic revitalization as a major port of embarkment for troops destined to the North African Campaign, and its hard-edged reputation rapidly dissipated.
Today the local economy predominately consists of small and medium-sized cooperatives in the service sector, with an emphasis on social care, business services, and tourism. The city is a major tourist destination with a sunny, oceanic climate and has become widely known for its world-class trails, picturesque cliffs, theme parks, nightlife.
It is an important center of Balisca's film and special effects industries, and increasingly a hub for information technology and innovation, hosting the headquarters of Baliscan tech giant Aletech. Together with neighboring Jatiel, the city is served by Alunzaro Airport, the fourth busiest airport in the country. The city's transport network includes high-speed rail links managed by the South Baliscan Railway Company and ferries which link the city and the island of Piscaria.
