Ancolo (Ewondo: Ongola, lit. "City of seven hills/mountains") is a major city in Formosa's Sanaga Region. With a population of approximately 553,000 (2020), it is Formosa's fifth-largest city. It lies south of the Sanaga River at an elevation of 750 metres and is located along the key rail spine between northern and littoral Formosa.
Prior to Spanish settlement, the Ancolo region was inhabited by the Ewondo people. Spanish settlers established a fort in the area in 1863 as they extended their authority through more of modern Formosa. Ancolo developed as a military post, and later a hub of the rubber and ivory trade. It emerged as a key administrative city in the 20th century before receiving an upsurge in development with exploitation of bauxite and cobalt in the Formosan interior, driving focus to Ancolo as a logistical centre.
The Ewondo people make up a large plurality of Ancolo's population, which has been swelled by diverse migration from throughout Formosa.
