American Samoa (abbreviated AS) is a territory and of the United States in the south Pacific Ocean, southeast of the country of Samoa. It is located to the east of the International Date Line, east of the Cook Islands, north of Tonga, and approximately 1,700 miles northeast of New Zealand and New Duveland. American Samoa has a population of 44,620, and a size of 77 square miles (200 km2) which is smaller than the District of Columbia. The capital city is Pago Pago and the largest village is Tafuna.
