Akashi Group or simply Akashi is a Teikonian multinational conglomerate holding company headquartered in Akashi Corporate Center, Kaijo, Teiko. It comprises numerous affiliated businesses, most of them united under the Akashi brand, and is the largest Teikonian keiretsu (business conglomerate) in terms of market value and capitalization. Since 2000, it has consistently ranked among the top ten most valuable brand in Teiko.

The company traces its root to a general trading company founded in 1866 by Seiichi Akashi. Since then the group had diversified into different industries including real estate, banking, heavy industry, food processing, textiles, insurance, securities, entertainment and media, and retail. Notable Akashi industrial affiliates includes Akashi Land and Properties which developed and maintains Akashi Global City and Meinohana Strip, Akashi Hotels and Resorts International which is the largest hotel owner and management company in Teiko, and Teiko Shinbun which is the oldest newspaper in Asia.

Leadership of the company has always been handled by members of the Akashi clan. In November 2023, former Daijō-daijin Seijuro Akashi was elected chairman of the Akashi Group while Shun Akashi and Yanqi Akashi were elected as board members completing the transition to the new generation of Akashi clean leaders triggered by the passing of Masahito Akashi in April 2023.

History[edit | edit source]

In May 1866, Seiichi Akashi established the Rakuzan Trading Corporation to engage in trading of imported western goods in central Teiko. In 1889, the company expanded their operations to include engagements in real estate management, land reclamation, land grading, harbor repair construction and related work in the Rakuzan northern harbor region. In 1908, it was among the first ten companies to be listed in the now defunct Hakata Stock Exchange as Akashi Industries Co., Ltd., the company then constructed factories across Rakuzan and Kaijo including the Hakata Shipworks which is now serves as a museum for shipbuilding.

World War II destroyed most of Akashi's industrial infrastructure within Teiko, after the country regained independence in 1945, Akashi Corporation assets were returned to company and was renamed as Akashi Corporation. The company reverted back to general trading, looking to handle products from Teiko's major manufacturing firms in various industries, starting a new existence as a general trading firm with a sales staff of just 32 people. The firm listed its shares on the Teiko Stock Exchanges in 1946. In 1951, the company began investing in real estate development and manufacturing once again with the development of the Akashi Global City.

By the 1990s, Akashi Corporation has become one of the largest conglomerates in the country with subsidiaries in multiple industries including hospitality, motion pictures, construction, chemicals, banking and real estate development. Akashi Corporation would continue to growth as one of the nation's most valuable brand by 2018.
