A1 Autovia is Formosa's busiest east-west motorway and the oldest route in the Formosan Autoroute Network. It connects Edéa at its western terminus to Garua-Bulai on the border with the Central African Republic. A1 carries the Tripoli-Cape Town Highway's western spur and the Lagos-Mombasa Highway for most of its route, connecting Formosa to the broader Trans-African Highway Network.
A1 Autovia evolved from a series of colonial dirt and stone roads. Full paving was completed by the FRELIFO administration in 1979, marking the first major motorway in Formosa to be paved from end to end. The highway runs one lane in each direction for most of its 768.3-kilometre length, widening to two lanes both ways through Edéa. A section between Ancolo and Obala, which also carries A6 Autovia, was expanded to two lanes each way in 2017-18.
Notable exits[edit | edit source]
