General elections were held in Teiko on 25 November 2021. Voting took place in all constituencies in order to elect all the 250 members of the Royal Council, the unicameral legislature of the country. As the constitution requires the Daijō-kan to resign in the first Royal Council session after a general election, the elections will also lead to a new election for Daijō-daijin in the Royal Council, and the appointment of a new Daijō-kan, although ministers may be re-appointed. The election was the second election of the Kiyoshi era.

Background[edit | edit source]

The result of the 2018 general elections gave the ruling National Party its worst defeat in history. Three major factors led to the loss of support for the ruling party, rising popularity of the Democratic Party led by its charismatic leader Shun Izuki, the defection of National Party members to form the Constitutional National Party and the waning popularity of Seijuro Akashi who forced a revision of the party's constitution to allow an unprecedented fourth term. As the ruling party lost its absolute majority, party leader Seijuro Akashi struck a deal with the Social Democratic Party and Green Party for supply and confidence. Akashi also announced that he will retiring as leader before the next general elections.

Three events shaped the outlook for the next general elections, Covid-19 pandemic, May 2020 cyberattacks, and the fall of popular leader of the opposition and Democratic Party leader Shun Izuki.
