General elections were held in Teiko on 31 March 1983. Voting took place in all constituencies in order to elect all the 200 members of the Royal Council, the unicameral legislature of the country. As the constitution requires the Daijō-kan to resign in the first Royal Council session after a general election, the elections will also lead to a new election for Daijō-daijin in the Royal Council, and the appointment of a new Daijō-kan, although ministers may be re-appointed.

This is the only elections where two party leaders have previously served as Daijō-daijin prior to the elections and three more will serve as Daijō-daijin after the elections. Kamiya is counted twice as he served as two non-consecutive terms as Daijō-daijin before and after the elections. It is also one of the most competitive elections in post-war Teiko.
